Momentum stock screener

A momentum stock screener that applies the research, not forty filters

Momentum is the best-documented market anomaly: stocks that went up keep going up, on average, for a few months. Sweengs screens it the way the published papers define it, across 2,291 stocks, and returns each candidate with its trade plan.

What "momentum" means, precisely

Jegadeesh and Titman showed in 1993 that the stocks that performed best over six to twelve months keep outperforming over the following months. George and Hwang showed in 2004 that proximity to the 52-week high predicts what follows even better. These are measurable rules, not chart impressions.

A serious momentum screener therefore screens three things: relative performance over six and twelve months, distance to the 52-week high, and the underlying trend, for instance a price above its rising 200-day moving average. Volume confirms a breakout.

Why generic screeners fail at momentum

A general-purpose screener lets you assemble these criteria yourself, among dozens of others. The result depends on settings you have not tested, and the list it returns has neither a stop nor a position size. The hardest part is still ahead, in the evening, on dozens of names.

Sweengs starts from the strategy, not from the filters. Momentum, the 52-week high and the trend breakout are ready-made strategies, measured over ten years of history. The scanner applies them every evening and returns complete plans. The tests that led us to keep or reject a rule are published on the Verdicts page.

Momentum and swing trading: the horizon matters

Academic momentum is measured over months. Swing trading holds a position for a few days to a few weeks. The two meet when you enter a stock already in a trend, on a breakout or a pullback, with a structural stop and a planned exit. That is what Sweengs prepares: the screener finds the trend, the trade plan sets the entry and the exit.

Before trading a variant, measure it: the backtest includes fees and slippage, otherwise the result lies.

What the screener returns

Ranked candidates

One score per stock: trend strength, distance to the 52-week high, relative volume. The strongest on top.

A plan per candidate

Entry, stop, two targets, position size derived from your capital and the risk you accept.

The market context

The market regime (index above or below its 200-day moving average) and sector health, so you do not buy momentum in a market that is breaking down.

How to screen momentum with Sweengs

  1. Pick the momentum, 52-week high or trend breakout strategy.
  2. The scan runs in the evening across 2,291 stocks and returns the matches.
  3. Read the score, the market regime and the plan of each signal.
  4. Add your picks to the watchlist; the exit plan is already written.

Questions about the momentum screener

Does the momentum screener use the 200-day moving average?

Yes, as a trend filter: a stock is only retained in bullish momentum if its price is above its 200-day moving average, itself rising. It is a filter, not a buy signal on its own.

What is the difference with a regular screener?

A screener returns tickers according to filters you set. Sweengs applies a written, tested strategy and returns priced trade plans. You do not assemble criteria, you choose a method.

Does momentum still work?

The cited papers document it over decades and several markets, but no anomaly is guaranteed, and momentum has brutal reversals. Our own measurements, favourable or not, are published on the Verdicts page.

Which markets?

United States, Canada, United Kingdom: 2,291 stocks filtered by market cap and liquidity.

Past performance of the strategies shown does not predict future results. Sweengs is an educational and decision-support tool, neither investment advice nor portfolio management. The application is available in English; some site pages remain in French.
